In many jazz piano or guitar parts, the chords are indicated by 'chord symbols'- Let us start with the key of C, showing the notes that make up our basic chords, and printing the chord symbol above:

C (C, E, G) our 'home' chord.
C6 (C, E, G, A) the same, with the sixth degree of the scale (A) added on to give a slightly 'grittier' sound.
C7 (C, E, G? Bb). Our home chord with a minor 3rd XG-Bb) added on top.
C maj. 7 (C, E, G, B), here a major third (G-B) is added on.
